Participation in Horizon Europe projects is strategically important for AFA because it strengthens the organisation's ability to contribute to high-impact international innovation while expanding its scientific, technological, and societal reach across Europe and beyond.

Horizon Europe provides AFA with the opportunity to collaborate with leading universities, research organisations, industries, public authorities, SMEs, innovators, and civil society actors working at the forefront of emerging technologies and sustainable development. Through these collaborations, AFA actively contributes to the co-creation of solutions addressing major global challenges in artificial intelligence, climate resilience, health, energy transition, agriculture, biodiversity, digital transformation, and social inclusion.

Engagement in Horizon Europe also enables AFA to transform emerging ideas and scientific knowledge into practical and scalable outcomes with measurable societal value. Through multidisciplinary projects, pilot activities, digital innovation actions, technology demonstrations, and capacity-building initiatives, AFA supports the responsible and human-centred deployment of advanced technologies while contributing to sustainable development and long-term societal resilience.

AFA places particular importance on disseminating and transferring knowledge generated through Horizon Europe participation across its international network of researchers, scientists, inventors, SMEs, policymakers, educators, entrepreneurs, youth communities, and individual end-users. Through workshops, seminars, digital learning activities, collaborative platforms, publications, media initiatives, and public engagement actions, AFA aims to increase awareness of the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in supporting the achievement of European Union and United Nations strategic priorities and sustainability objectives for 2030 and 2050.

AFA's networks learn how AI-driven innovation can contribute to climate neutrality, circular economy transitions, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy integration, biodiversity protection, healthcare resilience, digital inclusion, sustainable industrial transformation, disaster preparedness, and evidence-based policymaking. AFA seeks to ensure that scientific and technological advances are not confined within research environments but are translated into accessible knowledge, practical tools, and informed societal dialogue capable of generating broad public benefit.

Participation in Horizon Europe further strengthens AFA's institutional knowledge, scientific capabilities, and international visibility. It enables the organisation to engage with advanced research infrastructures, emerging methodologies, open science frameworks, and highly specialised expertise from across Europe and internationally. This contributes to organisational growth, long-term strategic partnerships, professional development, and the expansion of collaborative innovation ecosystems.

Importantly, Horizon Europe participation directly supports AFA's mission to promote inclusive, ethical, and impactful innovation where technology serves people, communities, and sustainable development goals. By connecting research, innovation, education, policy, and public engagement, AFA contributes to building a future in which Artificial Intelligence and advanced technologies support a more resilient, equitable, sustainable, and environmentally responsible society aligned with EU and UN visions for 2030 and 2050.

We support the transition toward decentralised, low-carbon, and resilient energy systems aligned with EU Green Deal priorities and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Europe continues to face major economic, societal, and environmental energy challenges, including rising energy costs, energy poverty, grid instability, climate pressures, and unequal access to clean-energy benefits. According to the European Commission, more than 8,000 energy communities already operate across the EU, while over 2 million European citizens participate in community-energy initiatives supporting local energy resilience, affordability, and energy democracy.

Our activities focus on AI-enabled optimisation, predictive analytics, smart-grid intelligence, and adaptive energy management supporting efficiency, stability, and sustainability. At the same time, we recognise that the energy transition cannot succeed without citizen participation, social inclusion, public trust, and community co-ownership of innovation pathways. EU policy increasingly highlights the importance of citizen-driven energy systems, inclusive governance, and local participation to strengthen public acceptance, reduce energy poverty, and ensure that communities directly benefit from clean energy.

AFA advances human-centred AI approaches that strengthen the relationship between communities, patients, healthcare professionals, and healthcare systems through more responsive, inclusive, and accessible health innovation ecosystems. Through applied research, interdisciplinary cooperation, stakeholder participation, and capacity-building initiatives, AFA contributes to the exploration of AI-enabled pathways for earlier health-risk identification, personalised care navigation, intelligent triage systems, remote assistance, predictive analytics, and improved communication between citizens and medical services. By connecting researchers, innovators, healthcare stakeholders, educators, policymakers, and communities, AFA helps accelerate practical, ethical, and socially responsive healthcare innovation aligned with evolving European societal priorities.

At the same time, AFA promotes more resilient and future-ready healthcare ecosystems through mentoring activities, digital learning environments, collaborative innovation programmes, open knowledge exchange, and transnational cooperation aligned with Horizon Europe priorities. Our initiatives strengthen AI literacy, innovation readiness, interdisciplinary dialogue, and responsible adoption of emerging health technologies among professionals, organisations, innovators, and communities. Through sustainability-driven and human-centred approaches, AFA contributes to narrowing the gap between technological advancement and real community needs while fostering healthier societies, stronger healthcare resilience, and more equitable participation in the future of AI-enabled healthcare across Europe.

Europe's agricultural systems are facing escalating pressures linked to climate instability, soil degradation, biodiversity decline, pollinator losses, water scarcity, rising production costs, and increasing demands for sustainable food security. Farmers and rural communities are increasingly challenged by extreme weather events, ecosystem degradation, declining organic matter, fragmented agricultural data, and the urgent need to reduce environmental impacts while maintaining productivity, resilience, and long-term viability. Pollinator populations, essential for crop production and ecosystem balance, continue to decline due to habitat loss, pesticides, pathogens, and climate-related disruptions, creating significant risks for biodiversity, agricultural productivity, and food-system stability across Europe.

AFA contributes to addressing these challenges through activities linked to precision agriculture, environmental intelligence, AI-enabled monitoring, sustainable biomass valorisation, and climate-smart agricultural innovation. Particular focus is placed on challenges related to pollinator protection, biodiversity monitoring, early-warning environmental systems, sustainable soil restoration, carbon sequestration, circular bioeconomy strategies, and adaptive management of agricultural ecosystems under changing climatic conditions. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, applied research, stakeholder participation, and responsible AI-driven approaches, AFA helps strengthen more resilient, environmentally responsible, and future-ready agricultural systems capable of supporting both ecological sustainability and rural socio-economic resilience across Europe.
